In order to become a backflow assembly tester (BAT) in Washington State, one doesn't necessarily need a background in plumbing, although that definitely helps.

The Washington State Department of Health, in partnership with the Waterworks Operator Certification Advisory Committee, establishes regulations, polices and procedures for both the water purveyors and backflow testers.

Green River College in Auburn administers the certification program as well as the practical examination. The only prerequisite to apply to take the exam is a high school diploma or GED; training & experience is not required.

An annual renewal fee maintains the certification, and BATs have to meet a professional growth requirement via an exam during each designated reporting period.

Here at Certified Backflow Testing, our BATs are held to a high standard, with at least one full month of supervised training prior to being cleared to test individually. Bi-weekly meetings ensure that our testers that perform backflow testing in Mercer Island, Kirkland, Renton and Newcastle are up to speed with any news and information. Our test kits are calibrated annually to ensure accurate readings are given for backflow testing in Bellevue, Bothell and Woodinville as well as any other area around the Puget Sound.
